The Old Limestone Arch in Mumbai, India In Mumbai’s Cumballa Hill area, there is a really old arch over a lane. The lane goes towards The B. D. Petit Parsee General Hospital. The foundation stone of the hospital was laid in 1907 by Sir George Clarke, the then Governor of Mumbai. The hospital played a very important role during the outburst of the bubonic plague in Mumbai during that era. It is believed that this arch was built sometime during the early years of the 20th century. Back in the day, when the hospital served as a plague hospital, the arch marked the boundary of the hospital, isolating the plague patients from the rest of the city. The artistic horse shaped brackets on the arch’s ornate columns may have been designed symbolically to ward off evil energies. The arch is a reminder of old heritage architecture which once gave a distinct identity to the culture of the city. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-old-limestone-arch #mumbai #arch #old #hospital #cumballahill #parseegeneral #petitparsee #georgeclarke #sirgeorge #governor #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Phu Loc Champa Temple in An Nhon Bac, Vietnam Rising silently above the flat agricultural expanses of An Nhon Bac, the solitary silhouette of Phu Loc Champa Temple commands its hilltop domain like an ancient sentinel. Built during the 12th century, this weathered sanctuary stands roughly 15 meters tall with a square base, its time-worn brick masonry bearing the distinct architectural hallmarks of a vanished civilization, including vertical pilasters, false doorways, and spearhead arch motifs. Early French scholars famously cataloged the site as Tour d'Or, or the Golden Tower, inspired by the radiant amber glow the structure catches under specific angles of sunlight. Unlike many Cham ruins swallowed by modern urban sprawl, Phu Loc occupies a dramatic isolation on its elevated summit, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and an eerie sense of connection to the medieval kingdom of Champa that once ruled these plains. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/phu-loc-champa-temple #nhonbac #locchampa #champatemple #phuloc #goldentower #earlyfrench #cham #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Plaza Maria Pita in A Coruña, Spain You begin to see the plaza as parts of it starts to peek through the imposing arches surrounding the plaza in the old part of town. The massive, rectangular plaza is surprising in its sheer size at 10,000 square meters. It is surrounded by government buildings including the town's city hall designed in classic Gallaecian architecture. At its center is the plaza's most interesting feature, a statue of Maria Pita, the local heroine for which the plaza is named. During the Battle of the Armada of 1589, the British invaded A Coruña attacking the city walls. The locals defended the town valiantly. They included a young man carrying the town's banner and his wife, Maria Pita. The young man was shot dead. His wife took up the town's banner crying "those with honor follow me" and led the offensive. The cry rallied the troops who eventually repulsed the invaders. Maria Pita was declared a heroine and awarded a soldiers pension by the King of Spain. Today, her statue looks over the plaza she helped save from invaders. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/plaza-maria-pita #mariapita #spain #coruna #battle #british #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Durham Pump Station in Durham, North Carolina The brick and concrete foundations of a large pumping station sit at the water's edge in Eno River State Park. A few yards upstream, straddling Nancy Rhode Creek, the remains of a washed-out stone dam are among the many scattered remnants of the system that once provided drinking water to Durham, 8 miles south. The pump station is reached by several well-maintained hiking paths in the state park, and is free to visit during daylight hours. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/durham-pump-station #pumpstation #statepark #enoriver #rhodecreek #nancyrhode #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance in Hong Kong The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance was first performed in 1880, in what was then a small Hakka fishing and farming village. The tradition continues to this day, with the ceremony taking place on the evenings of the 14th, 15th and 16th days of the 8th lunar month. According to oral history, much of the livestock in Tai Hang village was being devoured by a python, which was eventually tracked down and killed. This was followed immediately by a severe plague, which led to many deaths. The superstitious villagers became convinced that the plague was retribution for killing the serpent, which they believed to be the son of the dragon god. The plague persisted until a village elder claimed that Guanyin, goddess of mercy and compassion, appeared to him in a dream, revealing that the way to end the suffering was to perform the Fire Dragon Dance, and to let off firecrackers around the village. After doing so, the plague miraculously vanished, leading the dance to be performed every year afterwards to ward off famine. The dragon zoomorph itself is made from rattan frames, ropes, iron wires and straw. A new dragon is crafted every year for the parade, with construction taking two weeks from start to finish. The body is comprised of 31 sections and measures 67 meters from head to tail, weighing just over 100 kilograms. The head of the dragon alone weighs over 45 kilograms, and requires a rotating team of 8-10 performers to carry and move. The ceremony begins with an eye dotting ritual at the Lin Fa Kung temple to symbolize the dragon's awakening. The parade then heads to Wun Sha Street, Tai Hang's main street, where 10,000 to 12,000 lit incense sticks are inserted onto the dragon, before it begins its journey around Tai Hang's streets. The incense sticks from the dragon are distributed to the audience at the parade's end, supposedly representing blessings and good fortune. So, for those wanting an upturn in luck, it pays to stay until the very end! On the final day, the ceremony concludes with a ritual known as 'Dragon returning to Heaven'. Whereby the fire dragon is maneuvered to Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter to be launched into Victoria Harbour, signifying misfortune being taken away. For those visiting Hong Kong outside of the Mid-Autumn Festival window, the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Heritage Centre, housed in the old school building on School Street, has a small exhibit detailing the dance and its significance. What the exhibit cannot convey, is the exhilaration of experiencing the parade firsthand. The sight of the lit up dragon being carried by a team of volunteer Tai Hang residents, snaking its way around the streets, is impressive in itself. However, the smoky haze and scent from the incense, as well as the cacophony of noise from the accompanying traditional Chinese dagu drums, make the entire ceremony a truly remarkable sensory overload. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/tai-hang-fire-dragon-dance #taihang #hongkong #hangfire #firedragon #dragondance #dragonheritage #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Salle du Jeu de Paume in Versailles, France A few blocks from the lavish Palace of Versailles, hidden behind a small side street, you can find a commemoration of one of the most pivotal events in French history. Built so that the cream of the French nobility could have a place to play Jeu de Paume, a precursor to modern tennis, this large wooden room played a very minor role in the life of the nearby palace until the fateful year of 1789. That May, King Louis XVI called together delegates from across France to address the kingdom's economic crisis. Rising tensions between the king and representatives of the Third Estate (everyone who wasn't in the nobility or clergy) came to a head on June 20. Shut out of their regular meeting hall and fearing a royal crackdown, the Third Estate delegates rushed to the nearest space they could find that would fit them all - the royal tennis court. Led by principled polymath Jean Sylvain Bailly, the delegates declared themselves to be the National Assembly of France, and swore an oath not to disband until France had received a constitution. As the first major assertion of Third Estate power independent of the king, the Tennis Court Oath is considered by many historians to mark the official start of the French Revolution. Since June 30, 1789, the National Assembly has continued to exist in some form or another down to the present day. The tennis court was renovated in 2022, and now hosts a mini museum to the Revolution. In addition to a statue of Bailly and the busts of many other revolutionary oath-takers, you can see an original Jeu de Paume racket and architecural models of the tennis court and the Bastille prison. The room also features a massive recreation of the unfinished Tennis Court Oath paiting by famous revolutionary propagandist (and later Napoleonic propagandist) Jacques Louis David. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/salle-du-jeu-de-paume #tenniscourt #thirdestate #france #paume #jeu #versailles #nationalassembly #french #frenchrevolution #oath #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Gnome Hill in White Hall, Maryland Baltimore County's NCR Trail is a popular destination for running, walking, biking, and even tubing access. But it's also gnome to a unique and colorful landmark. Less than one mile north of the White Hall NCR Trail parking lot sits a small hill covered in gnomes, and gnome puns. The owner of the property estimates that Gnome Hill has been around for over 20 years, but says that it really gained momentum around 2020. Now, people frequently leave new figures for him to repair and add to the collection. While visiting, take a break on the courtesy bench and grab a drink or snack (cash only, honor system). https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/gnome-hill #whitehall #gnomehill #ncrtrail #baltimorecounty #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

World’s Tallest Barber Pole in Forest Grove, Oregon There’s something wonderfully absurd about pulling into a quiet Oregon park and finding a 73-foot barber pole just
standing there like it owns the place. I stopped by in May and couldn’t stop grinning. Forest Grove put it up back in the ’70s because some barbershop singers decided Texas’s “tallest” wasn’t tall enough. Classic Oregon energy. What makes it special isn’t the height or the stripes (though those red-white-and-blue bands still look sharp against the sky). It’s the pure, unapologetic small-town commitment to a joke that somehow became a landmark. In a world full of carefully curated attractions, this one quietly insists that harmony, community, and a little friendly one-upmanship are worth celebrating on a ridiculous scale. Worth the detour every time. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/worlds-tallest-barber-pole #forestgrove #barberpole #oregon #world #classicoregon #worth #texas #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit

Arden Point and Glenclyffe in Philipstown, New York Starting at the metro north Garrison train station, this hiking trail has various unique parts. During the first leg, you will find what appears to be an abandoned entrance to a building, in the form of a brick wall with door/window openings covered in vines and graffiti. Second leg you cross over a pedestrian bridge above the train tracks to Arden Point for various views of the Hudson River beyond. Third leg includes some bamboo forested areas as well as the path Benedict Arnold used to flee before his treasonous actions were discovered. Laredo’s Palace in AlcalĂĄ de Henares, Spain As soon as you leave the AlcalĂĄ de Henares train station and walk toward the historic center, a richly decorated Neo‑MudĂ©jar brick building immediately stands out, reminiscent of Comillas Palace by GaudĂ. This is Laredo Palace, created by Manuel JosĂ© Laredo (1842–1896), who was not only the city’s mayor but also a painter, decorator, and restorer. Completed in 1886, the palace blends Neo‑MudĂ©jar, Neo‑Gothic, and Modernist elements. Although the official architect was Juan JosĂ© de Urquijo, Laredo personally directed the entire project, inspired by William Morris’s Arts and Crafts movement. He oversaw everything from the architectural plans to the interior decoration. The exterior features brick façades with geometric patterns, galleries with Moorish latticework, and, most notably, a clock‑tower minaret topped with a dome covered in green and white glazed ceramic scales. Inside, Laredo painted Modernist decorative motifs and others inspired by Pompeian frescoes. One highlight is the “Hall of Kings,” which contains portraits of monarchs and a ceiling depicting the medieval understanding of the cosmos. Neo‑MudĂ©jar and Moorish elements dominate the interior, including a small Arab room adorned with plasterwork and tiles inspired by the Alhambra. To reinforce this aesthetic, Laredo incorporated archaeological pieces from other buildings: the vault and columns from Santorcaz Castle, coffered ceilings from the Palace of the Marquises of Tendilla, and tiles from the Palace of Peter I, among others. Today, the palace houses a small museum where visitors can see, among other exhibits, a complete copy of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible, the first of its kind in the world. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/laredos-palace #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit
