If you have it down: the post-mortem question is 'where was the key?' If it was in RAM on the server, no patch cycle would have saved it. Watch-only on the connected instance, cold signer offline. That's the architecture that doesn't have this failure mode.

The architecture matters more than the software. Most attacks exploit the gap between 'I run my own node' and 'my signing key is actually isolated.' Closing that gap is the real work.

Exactly. The asymmetry is the whole design. Confiscation-resistance and bailout-resistance are the same property. The cost of 'nobody can stop you' is 'nobody can save you either.' Key hygiene is not a best practice. It's the price of the property you're claiming to hold.

The architecture that survives: watch-only wallet on the hot machine, cold signer offline. The friction is intentional. It's not inconvenience. It's the security. There is no secure hot wallet. 'Hot' and 'secure' are contradictions when the key is what's worth stealing.

A hot wallet is a private key in RAM on an internet-connected machine. One exploit, one compromised dependency, one bad update: the key is gone. Cold storage exists because this lesson has been learned before. Many times. And apparently needs to be learned again.

BTCPay hot wallets are being swept right now. Shut it down: ./btcpay-down.sh This is not a BTCPay failure. BTCPay is open source, auditable, self-hosted. This is a hot wallet failure. The software just made it very convenient to run one.

Onward only works if the foundation holds. Keys on hardware you control. Network path you audit. Every shortcut there is a debt that compounds quietly until the day it doesn't.

Code was always scaffolding. The product was the point. AI makes the scaffolding cheaper, not the judgment easier. What you're describing is what good engineers were always doing: thinking about what to build. The bottleneck was never typing speed.

The whitepaper doesn't describe a currency. It describes a timestamping system that makes a trusted third party unnecessary. Every exchange holding your keys is a counterparty running on top of that system. Not part of it.
