Since the acquisition of Twitter in 2022, Elon did nothing to change platform's legacy account-based architecture that doesn't provide self-custody or censorship-resistance. Swapping one tyrant for another did nothing to increase freedoms. On opposite, it gave non-tech savvy users a false sense of freedoms, decelerating adoption of freedom tech like Spasm and Nostr. The same as Zuck, Jack, Durov, or other slave tech overlords, Elon tries to lock users inside his centralized monetizable walled garden. It's worth noting that his efforts to lock Twitter down are nothing new. Elon became rich by working on PayPal, which is a typical centralized fiat-based SlaveFi tech operated from an extremely hostile jurisdiction with KYC and full compliance. He also likes to use state violence against people, his cars are privacy nightmare, and Starlink enforces ridiculous laws across the world. For example, Starlink empowers the global adversary by restricting torrenting, essentially enforcing strong anti-free speech laws based on outrages concepts like copyright, which are usually ignored outside of western police states. In 2026, failing to keep speech locked within his walled garden via technical means, Elon resorted to state violence in attempt to shut down alternative privacy-preserving frontends like Nitter. We use privacy-focused hosting service Kyun to host a portion of our infrastructure, which went down on September 16, 2026, due a serious incident on Kyun's side. After a few days of waiting, we decided to redeploy everything to another server. Most of our infra runs on Spasm, which has easy deployment methods with Docker/Podman and Ansible, as well as scripts for restoring backups, but Session SOGS is pretty outdated, so it only supports old distros like Debian 12 and Ubuntu 22, and restoring a backup is not a trivial task. Anyway, this incident was a great stress test for our infrastructure that allowed us to evaluate our censorship resistance, since our directory, podcast, videos, blog, forum, and Session channel went down. The privacy community is full of holy wars similar to the crypto world. That leads to biases and tribalism around false narratives. A good example is the Session vs SimpleX war. Both solutions are flawed walled gardens, but they are currently the best messengers in town with very different architectures and use cases.
