I sold Bitcoin this month to cover rent. Not because I wanted to. Because my fiat ran out before my paycheck comes in. I’ve been in Bitcoin since 2021. I believe in it completely. I hodl, I self-custody, I think about sats that I could have stacked when I am spending. All the things the maxis always preach. Then I realize the part nobody with a big stack talks about: I don’t earn in Bitcoin, I earn fiat. Life costs money. Some months, the two just don’t line up. So I sold. It stung. Not because of the current price (it wasn’t even that bad), but because of what it represents. Every sat I sell is a sat that isn’t compounding for 20 years. Every time I do this, I’m trading my future for my present. And the present always wins because rent comes due every single month. I sold 0.01 btc at 83k, just a little more than 1k in my currency. It provided me some buffer for this month, but I already know what’s coming in the next few weeks. By next month that buffer will disappear. It will go to paying my kids’ school fees. It will go to groceries. It will go to paying my credit card debt. I don’t have a solution yet. That’s why I’m writing this. I’m one person with a modest income, a family, and a conviction I can’t afford to fully live out. I’m going to document the whole thing. How I budget in a currency that swings 20% in one month. When I sell. When I don’t. What I learn. Maybe it will help someone in the same spot. Or maybe you can help me. If you’ve ever sold at the wrong time because life didn’t wait, I’d like to hear how you handle it.
