Your Pets Have a New Hospital HOD Pet Animal Hospital is one of the newest veterinary hospitals in Kuwait. It opened this past year, but the company behind it has actually been around since 1989 and operates the largest chain of veterinary hospitals in Kuwait. You probably haven’t heard of their other hospitals since they mainly focus on large animals, but I’m sure you’ve heard of their flagship companion animal hospital, Royal Animal Hospital. I personally use RAH whenever my dog has any issues, which is why I was curious to check out their new project, HOD. HOD was created with the aim of making high-quality general veterinary care more accessible and affordable to everyone. A lot of the decisions that went into creating HOD were based on what they learned from years of running RAH. For example, they noticed that a lot of people bring in stray animals for treatment, so at HOD, they created an entire examination wing dedicated to strays. The wing even has its own separate ventilation system to reduce the risk of airborne diseases spreading from strays to other animals in the hospital. HOD also offer discounted rates for treating strays to encourage people to help animals in need without worrying too much about the cost. HOD also uses the same high-end diagnostic equipment as RAH, from the latest X-ray machines with built-in AI for more detailed X-ray analysis to top-of-the-line laboratory analyzers. Beyond medical services, HOD has also just introduced cat boarding facilities. I checked it out and it’s pretty cute. Every cat gets their own dedicated two-floor cat home during their stay, and each one comes with a built-in webcam so owners can check on their cats from anywhere, at any time. With the new dog laws recently announced, HOD is also running a campaign to encourage responsible dog ownership through registration, vaccination, and microchipping. If your dog is already vaccinated and microchipped, you can book a complimentary vet appointment to register your dog under your Civil ID. The Final Round of GR Yaris Cup is Here This weekend the fifth and final round of the GR Yaris Cup Season 3 is taking place. The GR Yaris Cup is a locally created racing series by Toyota AlSayer, where 12 drivers compete against each other across multiple races. A couple of weeks ago I posted about Round 4, which was a lot of fun to attend and the whole of Kuwait Motor Town was pretty busy that weekend with multiple events taking place. This weekend the practice sessions and qualifying will take place on Thursday, with the main races and awards ceremony on Friday. On both days there will also be hot laps where passengers get rides around the circuit, as well as food trucks, racing simulators, and other fun activities. There is no entry fee, and all the races are free to watch at the track. I got the Elgato Stream Deck I have a horrible keyboard that I use for my sim set up, the Logitech K400. It’s the most popular sim racing keyboard because it has a trackpad built into it, so it can be used while on your lap. It’s cheap, it’s light and everyone hates using it including me. The only thing I really use it for is launching my games and on the very rare occasion adjusting some settings for my wheel (which I can also do through an app on my phone). I don’t remember what triggered this idea, but the other day I realized I could skip the keyboard completely by getting an Elgato Stream Deck. It’s a little device made up of tiny screens which are also buttons. You can set this buttons to do whatever you want including launching apps, so I got one, and I love it. The Stream Deck is mounted to the right of my steering wheel and I set it up with all the racing games I’m currently playing as well as some additional settings like volume control, and other things. For example one game, Dirt Rally 2.0, when I first launch it requires my to press the enter key before I can start controlling the menu from my steering wheel buttons so I set up an Enter button. I also have a second page of button presses that include some basics like a directional key and a few other letters I need to press in certain games. The setup now makes it feel like an arcade machine in a way since I can launch a game by just pressing a button, it’s really great and I don’t need to use the crappy keyboard anymore. Most places in Kuwait are selling the unit for KD58, I went to Hawalli and found it at PCKuwait who were selling it for KD54 after discount. Bicycle Rentals Now Available 24/7 Extreme Bike Rentals just posted that starting today, you’ll be able to rent a bicycle any time of day, any day of the week. They have five locations on Gulf Road, but only their location next to the Swimming Pools Complex will be open 24/7 for now (Google Maps). I managed to ride my bike during the day last week, so the weather has definitely cooled down considerably. A Kuwait Store Among 20 Worth Traveling For Last week, Condé Nast Traveler released their list of “20 Extraordinary Shops Worth Traveling For,” and Kuwait’s own Zeri Crafts was one of them. Zeri Crafts is a small store located in Salmiya, inside what used to be the family’s beach house. It was founded in 2010 by Laila Al-Hamad and is a space where you can find traditional crafts from our region but with a modern touch. If you’ve never been to Zeri Crafts, you should because the space is really unique. Laila has written a beautiful piece about the history of her family’s beach house and even included some old family photos. As someone who’s been to the space multiple times and grew up in the area, it’s really difficult for me to imagine that the sea used to reach their house before the land was reclaimed to build Gulf Road. The stores featured in the Condé Nast article were selected by Paula Flynn from @the_shopkeepers and author of the book The World’s Most Beautiful Shops. Flynn chose independent shops that reflect the places they’re in and are shaped by their location and heritage. Zeri Crafts was the only store from the region featured on the list, with the others located all over the world, from Argentina to Australia, so it’s a pretty big deal. Get Hands On with the iPhone Duo Although the iPhone Duo is sold out everywhere and not even available to pre-order at a lot of Apple resellers, the stores do have units on display if you want to play around with it. I was at The Avenues earlier and got try outa Duo that was on display at Xcite, but GAIT also had one on display. First impressions is that the inside screen is very cool, but the phone is pretty heavy. All the reviews I read said it was heavy, but I thought they were exaggerating, they weren’t. While trying out the phone I kept thinking that all the weight was maybe in the plastic security tag on the back because I couldn’t believe it weighed that much. I don’t think you feel it as much with the Pro Max which weighs similar because the weight is spread across a larger area. Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial Opened in DC A new memorial which commemorates the US-led coalition that pushed Saddam Hussein’s forces out of Kuwait in 1991 has opened in Washington DC. The Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial aims to honor the 382 American military that lost their lives in the conflict. The memorial features curved walls made from stone that resembles desert sand. Along the wall sit sculptures of a bald eagle and a falcon to symbolize the enduring partnership between the United States and Kuwait. There is also a 28-foot bronze “Unity Shield” that displays the names of the coalition nations, with water cascading down its surface. The memorial is located just steps from the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
