William Mason (1672–1709): La plume volante (1707) The very same user r/ExquisiteKeiran who made the book "[La plume volante](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1b4nzC96UFOsJaKwTzw2hkqe1itnihGpC8L4yxn6GkNg)" accessible, explained how it came to the [many systems by Mason](https://www.reddit.com/r/shorthand/comments/12uwqj6/qotw_2023w16_the_various_shorthand_systems_of/): _William Mason_ was originally a writer of _William Cartwright’_s shorthand, published (and later plagiarised) by his nephew, Jeremiah Rich. Mason’s first work,** A Pen Pluck’d From an Eagles Wing, published 1672,** was an adaptation of the _Cartwright-Rich _system, with a few changes to the alphabet, some improved phrasing principles, and some additional briefs forms and affixes. Over 20 years’ practice of the Cartwright/Rich’s system led Mason to the conclusion that the system was not sufficient for verbatim reporting; and so, **in 1682 he went on to publish Arts Advancement:** a work which featured a brand new alphabet, greatly improved writing principles, and a much more extensive list of affixes and briefs. He would further refine this system in 1707 with his final work, La Plume Volante, changing a few letters in the alphabet and further expanding upon the system. **The 1707 system became the basis for Gurney’s Brachygraphy about 40 years later.** I had a really hard time finding A Pen Pluck’d From an Eagles Wing online—there don’t seem to be any copies of it on archive.org or in the Louis A. Leslie collection. The only version I could find was on ProQuest’s Early English Books Online, locked behind academia paywalls. Fortunately I’m still in university, however, so I was able to access the book through my school account. The book is actually really well-written—perhaps the best out of Mason’s three books. While I was reading through La Plume Volante, I kinda got the impression that Mason assumed people were familiar with his earlier works—there were a few things I noticed he neglected to explain in that manual.
