[Update] Anutin defends revocation of chief rabbi’s citizenship, vows firm enforcement Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said his decision to revoke the Thai citizenship of Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor, Thailand’s chief rabbi and head of Chabad of Thailand, complied with the law. Speaking after signing the order, Anutin said naturalized citizens must follow rules governing travel and their conduct in Thailand. He referred questions about the case’s details to the director-general of the Department of Provincial Administration. Asked whether criminal proceedings would follow, Anutin did not announce further charges, saying officials would act according to the law. “Whatever the violation, government agencies and officials responsible must take decisive action and enforce the law to its fullest extent to maintain peace and order in Thai society,” he said. The October 28 order cited Kantor’s continued use of American nationality after naturalization. It comes amid wider investigations into suspected nominee businesses and Chabad-linked companies, although the stated grounds for revoking his citizenship concern his use of his former nationality.

Kantor has led Chabad of Thailand since 1993. Chabad is a worldwide Orthodox Jewish movement headquartered in New York. The ministry cited a Department of Special Investigation finding that he used his American nationality to enter and leave Australia on 16 occasions, most recently on January 26, 2026. He became a Thai citizen in April 2013. The order said his conduct violated naturalization conditions and warranted revocation under Section 19(2) of the Nationality Act. It also cited potential harm to national security, the economy and society.

You're right. This is Al Jazeera English. Usually very well made documentaries but the topics do not always deserve the attention. But their mostly liberal viewers appreciate these kind of programs. It reliefs the viewers to think or, as you do, ask the 'real' questions. The documentary about the danger of MI5 and/or law enforcement has to be done by independent journalists or reporters not by Qatari TV.
