I think you have that reversed. The Bishop of Rome broke from orthodoxy by authorizing the filioque and bending the knee to Charlemagne. The other 4 Bishops stayed unified. Western history is written from the Roman Catholic point of view and the 1050 schism saw them excommunicated from the global Orthodox Church. What you know may not be so.
