You don't even have to log into maps to use it. Additionally, you can restrict it a bit in the settings. When I set it up on Graphene I was following some privacy tutorial video ... But I can't find it anymore. Lately I've found quite useful in helping me set up FOSS tech stuff.

I am avoiding the speech recognition. To me it feels awkward to use Graphene OS and allow Google to use the mic of my phone at the same time. Am I too paranoid?

Yep, works. You need to install sandboxed Google Play. You can activate Android Auto in the sandboxedd GP menu. Requires google maps and some permissions.
