You are partially right, privacy is important. How important? Run some numbers: Fast payments = Visa and Mastercard are worth US$1 trillion. Privacy = Monero and Defi is about another trillion. Savings = Gold, Real estate, Stock market, monetary funds… around US$900 trillion. Savings is a x900 bigger problem than privacy and fast payments right now.

Agree, the problem is for how long can the attacker sustain a “longer” branch. 1 hour of desync is accounted in the design, a full week is no bueno. Then at 51% their branch will accumulate more PoW over long periods of time.
