The Lightning whitepaper was still years away but we were already investing in bitcoin’s future. 2018 became the first public company to support bitcoin, introducing millions to bitcoin for the first time. 2019 We launched to fund open-source bitcoin development. 2020 We co-founded COPA to protect bitcoin innovation and defend developers from patent trolls. 2020 Block put bitcoin on its balance sheet, weeks after MicroStrategy. 2021 Bitcoin Clean Energy Initiative launched to accelerate the transition to renewable energy. 2022 We began building Proto to decentralize bitcoin mining, from chips to software. 2022 Cash App became one of the first major financial platforms to support the Lightning Network. 2024 We launched to more than 90 countries, bringing simple, secure self-custody worldwide. 2024 We helped defeat Craig Wright in court, standing up for Satoshi’s legacy and bitcoin developers worldwide. 2025 We launched Bitcoin Payments across Square, with zero processing fees and near-instant settlement in USD.
